Abbey Grange offers various extra curricular activites for students to get involved in
Our students have been busy planning and filming their news reports for the 2018 edition of BBC School News Report on 15th March. Here is their work.
This is our programme of extra-curricular activies we offer. Please view the link for more information
Choral Music has always been a big part of the extra curricula music programme offered at Abbey Grange. Our choirs have a proud history of being highlight fixtures at events both in school and as part of the wider community, performing a diverse repertoire of worship music both contemporary & classical, and vocal arrangements of popular songs. After the success of our seasonal choirs in previous years, we now offer several year-round choral and vocal groups for students to get involved in weekly: separate choirs for KS3 students and KS4-5 students of both genders, and a girls A Capella choir, with all of these ensembles focusing on exciting arrangements of pop & rock songs. Much of the arranging is done by our very own Miss Mills! Membership is open to all students within the age brackets of each ensemble, except for the girls A Capella group which is by invitation only. Any students interested in joining one of these ensembles (including the A Capella group) is encouraged to register their interest with a member of the music department staff. In addition to our weekly ensembles, when the holiday season arrives our famous Christmas Choir will begin practicing for their annual performances at the Leeds Minster and the Abbey Grange Christmas Concert. The Christmas Choir is open to all students (and staff) of any age or ability, and is compulsory for all of our GCSE & A-Level music students.
The Abbey Grange Concert band has been a staple of school events and an important part of the Abbey Grange community for several years. The band is directed by Graham Phillips, an accomplished musician who has many years of experience working with young people as an accompanist, keyboard teacher and band leader. Our Concert Band performs regularly as part of school concerts and is becoming increasingly involved in showcasing their talents at events in the community outside of Abbey Grange. In the past year, the Abbey Grange Concert band has performed as part of the city-wide Grand Depart celebrations for this years Tour de France, and as part of a festive concert for children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent at the Shipley Salvation Army Hall. The band meets every Thursday after school, and students of Grade 3 standard and above are enthusiastically encouraged to get involved.
The Abbey Grange Jazz Band is an exciting new ensemble that performs a diverse mixture of Jazz standards and contemporary arrangements. Despite its budding age, the Jazz Band has already become a prominent fixture of evening events at Abbey Grange and has begun performing competitively, playing a set at this year’s Music For Youth Festival in Wakefield. The membership of the Jazz Band features a diverse range of ages and ability levels right the way through from KS3 to Post-16, who enjoy socialising as well as making music together. A love of Jazz is not compulsory for potential new band members, and membership is drawn from a wide variety of musical backgrounds. All that is needed is an enthusiasm for performing as part of a dynamic and innovative group of young musicians. Jazz Band membership is usually by invitation only, but we encourage anyone who would like to inquire about becoming a member of the Band to come to the music office and register their interest with a member of the music department staff.
The Abbey Grange Rock Orchestra is a new ensemble that focuses on performing exciting arrangements of contemporary rock & pop songs using a wide array of electric instruments. The Rock Orchestra is structured just like a more conventional orchestra; it features guitar, bass, drum, keyboard, and vocal sections with multiple performers on each instrument. The Rock Orchestra is still in its early days but has already performed successfully at a number of school concerts, and our ambition is that as the ensemble grows in confidence and membership it will become a regular fixture in events at both Abbey Grange and the wider community. Membership consists largely of, but is not limited to, our GCSE music students and is usually by invitation only, but we encourage anyone who would like to inquire about becoming a member of the Rock Orchestra to come to the music office and register their interest with a member of the music department staff.
